Staal Signs Long-term Deal with Canes

Carolina Hurricanes forward Eric Staal just signed a 7 year deal reportedly worth $57.75 million at an average per season hit of $8.25 million. Call me crazy but that seems a bit excessive for a guy who has never scored more than 100 points in a season. His cap hit is higher than both Crosby and Malkin not to mention big-name centers like Chris Drury, Scott Gomez and Daniel Briere. If good (not great) players keep getting contracts that large, the NHL has another lockout in its sights.

Quick Note: The Montreal Canadiens have annonced that they are retireing Patrick Roy's number. Sweet. Roy is still a jerk though.
